Nitrogen Peroxide, NO₂

Definition

Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), a brownish highly reactive gas, is one of the six major regulated criteria pollutant gas that can cause acute respiratory illness. Though it is found at all levels in the atmosphere, it is dense near the surface and comes mainly from vehicle exhaust and fuel combustion sources. In the troposphere it photodissociates to give free oxygen atoms, which can produce ground level ozone (smog). It also produces corrosive Nitric Acid. In the sratosphere it takes part in the catalytic ozone reduction cycle.
