What data are put onto the Data Pool, and
how long they are going to stay?
The most popular and/or the most recent data are staged on the
Data Pool. For now, all the files
on the Data Pool have copies in the main ECS archive.
The GES DAAC decides what products go onto the Data Pool and how
long they stay, based on
input from users and Science Teams, and taking into account
system capacity and capabilities.
Here are some highlights and examples:
Browse files are very important, as they allow users to see
(partially) what is in the
corresponding data files before downloading the data files.
Therefore, browse files will stay in the
Data Pool as long as possible.
Very popular MODIS Level 1B products are used in applications and
are the foundation
for higher-level processing. These files are rather big, so we
keep them for only 1-2 months.
MODIS Level 1B subsampled products are rather small, so we keep
them for years.
MODIS Level 3/4 monthly and yearly products don't consume a lot
of disk space, and
are used frequently, so they could stay for several years.
