warn_icon.gif IMPORTANT MESSAGE Nov 23, 2015    Phasing out TRMM Version 6   

GES DISC is in the process of phasing out TRMM Version 6 data that covered the period December 1997 - June 2011. These data were superseded and obsoleted by the much improved Version 7. We also do remind that data from the TMPA Version 7 are still produced, even though the TRMM satellite was decommissioned in April, and deorbited in June, 2015. The Version 6 data will first be reduced in visibility in web search engines  and documentation, and then physically removed from the on-line archives by the end of 2015.

Dear TRMM users,

The TRMM mission is unfortunately coming to an end. It was launched on November 27, 1997, and has provided the research and operational communities with unique precipitation information from space for more than 17 years.  The mission will end on approximately April 8, 2015, in preparation for re-entry during the summer. The overarching TRMM science goal was to advance our knowledge of the global energy and water cycles by observing time and space distributions of tropical rainfall, convective systems and storms, and their associated hydrometeor structure and latent heating distributions. TRMM data provided the most accurate estimate ever of tropical rainfall and lightning and its variations (from sub-daily to monthly, seasonal, annual, and interannual time scales).

It led to new insights into the structure and evolution of convective systems, including extreme events like tropical cyclones and flood producing storms. TRMM provided a benchmark climatology used to validate and improve global climate and weather forecast models and shed light on ways in which humans impact precipitation. While TRMM is coming to an end, we are fortunate to have the very successful Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission beginning its second year of operations and providing valuable data with more advanced sensors and up to higher latitudes. We thank all of you who have helped to make TRMM a great success.

UPDATE!!! Hurricane Data Analysis Tool

The Hurricane Analysis Tool allows users to overlay various data products relevant in the study of hurricanes in an area plot, a time plot or animation using an interactive tool. The data products being offered include NCEP/CPC 4-km Global (60 deg N - 60 deg S) Merged IR Brightness Temperature Dataset, TRMM's product 3B42, TMI's sea surface temperature, NCEP Reanalysis sea level pressure and QuikScat's wind. This tool is beneficial for users to obtain a visualization comparison of two products during a hurricane event.

Hurricane Archive Gallery gets a face lift and is now dynamic! Check out the new gallery interface that allows you to select the year and hurricanes you want to view. Data access has also been added to the gallery along with QuikScat Wind and new CloudSat images! Take a look!

Latest Generated 3-Hour Rainfall Total Images

These are the latest images derived from the 3-hour near-real-time rainfall total (TMPA or 3B42RT) of the Atlantic and Gulf regions. The images created using the Giovanni analysis tool with the latest available data granules. These are generated and updated on a daily basis to observe current rainfall total activity. You can view more current images and animations of these and other parameters, such as AIRS temperature and Surface Pressure, by visiting the Image Gallery. A Past Hurricane Archive is also available to view animations of data set parameters of hurricanes that developed over the Atlantic region.
