There is plenty of dumping of waste petroleum products into the deep ocean
from ships, but of a greater local concern are routine discharges of waste in coastal
waters. Just such an event was observed from the Columbia taking place in the
Atlantic west of the Strait of Gibraltar. The rectangular course of a vessel started
to the north, the brisk winds blowing the discharge to the south. The end of the
apparent routine dump was near the Spanish city of Tarifa, probably the home port
of the ship.
