Lying as it does in the Mozambique Channel, Mayotte protrudes into the strong ocean
current that is part of the Agulhas Current system. In the summer, especially in July and
August, the effects of the powerful southwest monsoonal winds push the sea through the
channel to the northeast. Eddies are formed downstream from Mayotte as large, turbulent
vortices, one of which was observed and photographed from the flight deck by the
commander of the Challenger.
